The Netherlands has more than 200 shipping companies that sail under the Dutch flag. In total, they manage approximately 1,500 merchant ships.

The ships vary in size and type, but the designs in ships in the Netherlands are mainly characterized by specialization. A high-tech environment is part of the ship and at least as important, they have comfortable facilities. SOLAS describes the requirements that seagoing ships must meet when it comes to materials used for construction, equipment and crew, depending on the sailing area.
